My recent patterns seemed to all look alike as I reviewed them this morning, so I decided to consciously mix it up. I changed the scale and the proportions and layered the elements in different ways until I came up with this.
For inspiration as I made this shift I found the village of Cabanas de Tavira, Portugal whose history goes back to 1734, when the local tuna fishing industry needed somewhere to store their tools (I'm guessing as far back as the 1700's the wives refused to let them bring the fish-stinking tools of their trade anywhere near their homes!) Over time the cabanas morphed into residences, and today the gorgeous beaches drive a thriving tourism industry, though fishing is still an important source of food and income.
This pattern came about as I was thinking about the nets used to catch tuna as seen folded up in the colorful fishing boats pictured below. For color I looked at the whitewashed walls and tile roofs of the local buildings, and, of course, threw in a little indigo blue, because it almost always looks right to me.
