Arashi Shibori Workshop

Wrap it, bind it, dip it, and unwrap a storm. Arashi is the Japanese word for "storm"—a fitting name for a technique whose diagonal lines and rain-like textures evoke wind-driven water on cloth.

Also known as Japanese pole-dyeing, Arashi Shibori involves wrapping fabric around a cylinder, binding it tightly, and compressing the folds before dipping it into the dye. In this hands-on Arashi Shibori Workshop, we will use a variety of wrapping, tying, and clamping techniques to coax intricate resist patterns out of the indigo vat, practicing proper vat-dipping and oxidation methods along the way.

The indigo vat will be built, balanced, and ready for dyeing when you arrive. (If you want to learn how to build and maintain an indigo vat from scratch, check out the Intro to Indigo Dye Processes Workshop—though it is not a prerequisite for this class!)

Then it's time to play: wrap, bind, dip, and discover what the vat gives you. The true magic happens during the big reveal as you unwrap your finished textiles.

Supplies provided:

  • Indigo dye vat

  • Poles, clamps, and supplies for resist techniques

  • Sample cottons for dyeing

  • A tea towel for your finished project

 

Supplies you should bring:

  • Something small you'd like to dye (optional, and subject to suitability for the dye process)

  • Pen and paper for note-taking

  • Camera (everyone loves to photo their blue hands!)

  • Wear something you don't mind turning blue

  • Our standard classes are limited to 3 to 8 participants to ensure personal attention and room to work. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop if the minimum number of students is not met.

  • All classes and workshops must be paid in advance to reserve your space. You may change or cancel your registration up to 7 days prior to the first day of class to receive a refund issued as studio credit for a future workshop. Cancellations made after that window are non-refundable, and no make-ups or transfers are offered for missed classes.

  • If you are unable to attend, you are always welcome to transfer your registered spot to a friend. Simply let us know prior to the start of class so we can update our attendee list.

  • Private 1-on-1 instruction, customized small-group workshops, and individual project consultations are available. Sessions can be hosted at my studio or brought to your location. Inquire about a private session.
