Introduction to Handstitching

Hand stitching is an invitation to slow down, connect with natural materials, and explore the tactile language of thread and fabric. Whether you are seeking a meditative creative practice, looking to build foundational hand embroidery skills, or interested in sustainable textile mending, this hands-on workshop offers a welcoming space to learn, experiment, and make marks by hand.

In this class, we explore essential hand stitching techniques rooted in rich fiber traditions—including Japanese Sashiko and Boro, as well as Indian Kantha stitching. Together, we will cover thread selection, tension control, and fabric preparation, transforming foundational line work into textured, rhythmic patterns.

Stitches You’ll Master:

  • Running Stitch & Backstitch: Essential building blocks for structural line work, outline embroidery, and Sashiko repair.

  • French Knots & Lazy Daisy: Decorative accent stitches that add dimensional texture, floral motifs, and organic focal points.

  • Chain Stitch & Blanket Stitch: Versatile stitches ideal for bold textured lines, edge finishing, and appliqué patch borders.

Beyond technical mastery, this workshop focuses on the expressive power of slow craft. You’ll discover how these classic stitches can be applied to creative embellishment, fiber art collage, or practical garment repair and visible mending.

No prior sewing or embroidery experience is needed—all tools, materials, and hand-dyed threads are provided. Come curious, and leave with a versatile set of hand stitching skills and your own unique hand-stitched sampler.

  • Cloth for making a sampler

  • Threads

  • Photos of stitches and mending for inspiration

  • Tools and supplies from my collection for you to use in experimenting

 

Supplies you should bring:

  • Scissors

  • Needles

  • Thimble

  • Don’t fret if you don’t have any of these, I’ve got plenty to share.

  • Our standard classes are limited to 3 to 8 participants to ensure personal attention and room to work. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop if the minimum number of students is not met.

  • All classes and workshops must be paid in advance to reserve your space. You may change or cancel your registration up to 7 days prior to the first day of class to receive a refund issued as studio credit for a future workshop. Cancellations made after that window are non-refundable, and no make-ups or transfers are offered for missed classes.

  • If you are unable to attend, you are always welcome to transfer your registered spot to a friend. Simply let us know prior to the start of class so we can update our attendee list.

  • Private 1-on-1 instruction, customized small-group workshops, and individual project consultations are available. Sessions can be hosted at my studio or brought to your location. Inquire about a private session.
