Introduction to Indigo Dye Processes Workshop

An indigo vat has a unique way of turning plain cloth into something truly magical.

In this hands-on Introduction to Indigo Dye Processes Workshop, we explore the fascinating chemistry and natural dyeing methods that coerce brilliant shades of blue from the leaves of the indigo plant. I will guide you through an overview of surface design approaches, followed by a live demonstration on how to build, maintain, and recreate a working indigo vat on your own at home.

Then, we dive right into the dye vats—yes, you will likely go home with blue hands! You will experiment with resist methods, folding, and clamping techniques (similar to traditional shibori) to create your own collection of uniquely patterned, hand-dyed blue fabrics.

Supplies provided:

  • Indigo dye vat

  • Clamps and supplies for resist techniques

  • Sample cottons for dyeing

  • A tea towel for your finished project

 

Supplies you should bring:

  • Something small you'd like to dye (optional, and subject to suitability for the dye process)

  • Pen and paper for note-taking

  • Camera (everyone loves to photograph their blue hands!)

  • Wear something you don’t mind getting blue

  • Our standard classes are limited to 3 to 8 participants to ensure personal attention and room to work. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop if the minimum number of students is not met.

  • All classes and workshops must be paid in advance to reserve your space. You may change or cancel your registration up to 7 days prior to the first day of class to receive a refund issued as studio credit for a future workshop. Cancellations made after that window are non-refundable, and no make-ups or transfers are offered for missed classes.

  • If you are unable to attend, you are always welcome to transfer your registered spot to a friend. Simply let us know prior to the start of class so we can update our attendee list.

  • Private 1-on-1 instruction, customized small-group workshops, and individual project consultations are available. Sessions can be hosted at my studio or brought to your location. Inquire about a private session.
