The pattern today comes from imagery at a church in Torrão, Portugal, Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso. The warm golden background color comes from the painted trim, and the motifs come from the architectural details on the church's bell tower. I picked up some of the little shapes I saw in the finials and the round lacy motif is a nod to both the lacy dress the Lady of Good Success wears and the ornate decoration inside the church.
